History of Detroit JCF
Detroit JCF was started as a church planting project of Michigan Baptist General Conference
(Michigan BGC) in 2002. There were only two families including the Pastor’s
family who moved in to Novi from Canada. God blessed the small step of
faith and many more families and individuals were gradually added. The
first board meeting was held on January 31, 2004 and ever since all the
major decisions regarding the church activities, administration and outreach
have been made by the this board. Detroit JCF became an official and independent
church on February 27, 2005. The first annual meeting of the newly formed
church was held on the same day. The church mission statement, the bylaws
and budget were made public, and the church board members were voted in.
The celebration to mark the birth of the first Japanese Christian church was held on March 27, 2005.
Detroit JCF Activities
In the past two and a half years a lot of programs have been started. They
include the Sunday school, Pre-school, ESL class (English as the second
language class) choir, worship team (with guitars, drums, and a piano),
simultaneous interpretation service, youth meeting and sport teams including
Detroit JCF's softball club, basketball club and golf club. Also, we started
cell group meetings in which evangelism, discipleship training, prayer
and fellowship take place. In 2005 we are planning to start the "Alpha
Program" to reach out to non-Christians. The alpha materials have
been widely used by many churches, and we are going to use the Japanese
versions of 10 volume videos dubbed in Japanese by NHK.
Our Vision for the Future
Our goals are to be financially self-supportive as soon as possible and
start giving for the next church planting and to be an excellent model
church for the Japanese Church in the United States. May God be glorified
by our ministry of reaching out to the Japanese community and by our discipleship
in following the footsteps of Christ.
